Weekend Outings
One of the many and varied experiences in the NPAC Research Experiences for
Undergraduates program is spending 10 weeks in central New York state.
If you can drag yourself away from the computer, there are a number of
opportunities for individual or group weekend outings around Syracuse:
- The cities of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal
are all roughly 5 hours driving time from Syracuse.
Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, Ottawa, and Cooperstown
are even closer.
- To the southwest is the Finger Lakes region of long glacial lakes,
spectacular gorges and waterfalls, and lots of wineries.
- To the northwest is Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls.
- To the north is the scenic Thousand Islands region of the St Lawrence
River on the Canadian border.
- To the northeast is the Adirondack State Park, the largest park in
the continental United States (bigger than Yellowstone, Yosemite and
Glacier National Parks combined), with beautiful mountains, forests and
hundreds of lakes in one of the largest wilderness areas in the
eastern United States.
- To the southeast are the Catskill mountains and the Hudson River valley.
