About the Academy
This is an introductory course to the programming language Java. We will focus on the use of Java to make interesting displays on web pages. Students can expect to learn basic programming language and graphics constructs, and to use examples of more advanced language concepts such as object-oriented programming and threads.
The Java Academy runs for ten consecutive Saturdays, 2:30 to 4:30pm, beginning
February 6th , 1999.The format of the course will be approximately 25 minutes of lecture, 15 minutes to discuss the day's programming assignment, 1 hour for programming, and 15 minutes to discuss results.
Classes will be held on the Syracuse University campus at the Northeast Parallel Architectures Center,
Room 3-201 . Classes will also be held at other sites such as Boston, MA and Houston, TX. These classes will listen to the presentations from Syracuse and then do the assignments in their own lab. This course is not for University credit. The successful student will receive a certificate upon successful completion of this course.
This first offering of the Java Academy is free and open to middle school and high school students meeting the prerequisites (see below). The Northeast Parallel Architectures Center will provide a web site for the students to present their results.
